Another roasting french day. We manage to get going early as it’s a bit of stretch to Conques.
Tom is hitting his stride so to speak and wants to spend most of his time out of the backpack and running. When he’s tired (and sometimes he can’t admit it but it happens) he goes in the backpack for a spell. Theres some road walking on this stage which is a bit frustrating for him as there’s no way to keep a 3 year old safe on them, but there’s enough track to keep him entertained.
With an early start it’s not hard to get to Espeyrac by 10:30 (with a steep downhill) and pick up lunch. Another hot stretch on the climb out and we find Senergues and nice little picnic area with a playground so with Tom it’s almost impossible to pass. It’s 30-something degrees and we are feeling it.
Outside of Senergues it’s more steep climbing to the top and more road and track walking. Hot days make for high water intake and hard work.
As you approach Conques the road starts dropping away and your knees take a battering. The older boys are far ahead and flying down as it turns to very steep loose rock. Tom (on my back) claims he “has the power” to make it down like a tiny He-Man.
Once in to Conques you can see why it’s on a UNESCO list. It’s amazing. Like walking into Diagon Alley. Built into the side of a valley with an incredible cathedral, the beautiful cobblestone streets wind their way to the river running below. It is so special and we don’t know if we’ll ever get back here so we decide to take our first rest day and explore a little.
