It’s been a tough couple of days but the trail is rewarding enough that it makes it all worthwhile. I’m not sure what the regular GR65 is like but the Cele Valley is genuinely amazing.
A lot of general up and down today which is pretty draining in the heat. The biggest problem was water, between Marcilhac and 5kms from Cabarets there wasn’t a drop, then three houses in a row generously had taps outside for us to use, it’s always super appreciated when we find something like that.
Tom and I dragged at the back going pretty slowly but we found our own fun. A French air force Rafale fighter ripped 500 feet overhead at one point which might be normal for the rest of the world but it’s pretty rare in NZ.
We also managed to find some dolmens (neolithic burial chambers) which blew my mind for a bit. 5000 year old tombs are more interesting to me than Tom however.
Coming through St Sulpice is impressive as you go through the town half way up the cliff face and then again as you descend into Cabrerets with it’s Chateau and houses all carved in to the vertical slab. The town itself is very pretty and so ‘French’. Alissa is enamoured.
The boys are doing so well and are into the routine of each day: pack tents, find breakfast, get going, stop for lunch, get to camp and then get ready for another day. It’s simple and usually everyone is on the same page as there’s not too many surprises.
This area is famous for ancient rock art so we are going to stop at Pech Merle tomorrow to get some learnin’ in us.
