Day 17 – Plane watching

June 17, 2019 by Mark McCondach

I think we are finally becoming locals. Spend a nice morning having a chat with a couple of local ladies here at a coffee shop. Deep, inside knowledge on the extra-marital shenanigans of political figures are covered, Alissa is shocked.

It’s literally like a small town from the top down. We discuss the sheer pointlessness of name suppression on an island where virtually everyone is distantly related or knows everyone in your family.

Once again appealing` to the boys appetites we head to the Islander in Avarua to hit up the buffet lunch. The boys pile in to three plates each and then we pester all the other diners by jumping into the pool which is bizarrely placed in the centre of the dining area? Not our fault so splashing around is the order of the day.

Once done we try to head out and grab a look at a plane landing overhead at the airport. Because of the layout of the runway here you can stand at the end and have a plane roar overhead.

Thanks to Air NZ landing earlier expected we missed the landing so we decided to post up at the other end of the runway and wait for the departure overhead. 2 hours later……  we got a pretty awesome sight as an Airbus roared what felt like inches over our heads. Tom reported that he felt a bit scared, the older boys decided it wasn’t worth the wait. I thought it was great however so tough luck. Planes are cool.
