Camino Day 13 – Estaing to Golinhac

August 27, 2019 by Mark McCondach

Today is a lucky day, it’s overcast so the sun isn’t trying to beat us into the earth.

Up early and away before 8am is the right move, it’s a bit of road walking on the way out of town before turning inland and uphill after 3.5kms. Tom is rearing to go today and wants to get down and walk as much as possible which makes my load lighter but doesn’t help the pace too much.

Boys are going well though they claim to be super tired after yesterdays beat down in the sun and can’t go too far so Golinhac it is. Alissa and I are feeling good but you can’t fight the committee.

The uphill section is steep at times but no problems really thanks to the lower temps, just have to keep plugging away at it.

Once you’ve gone past Fontaneilles the climb is over and it rolls towards Golinhac steadily.

We go to the campground at Golinhac and it’s ideal, there’s a swimming pool, a little bar and it’s really quiet. Also an epicerie just outside the gates. What more can you ask for?

There is one thing that I can ask for. A normal toilet. This might sound weird but the toilets…. France still has squat toilets in most places. Im sure I’m the cultural swine about this but come on. You can usually find a standard toilet but when you do, no seat is to be found. Just a bare bowl. I don’t understand this. France, you know what toilet seats are, I’ve seen them. They shouldn’t be optional. Toilet paper is rare. You have to come prepared. And there is never (NEVER) soap. We all need soap.

Having said all that, this place delivers. It’s worth remarking on due to the rarity. Clean, seats and TP. A bathmat even. No soap obviously, that would be insane.
